The Darjeeling Limited

Movie Minute: The Darjeeling Limited

I finally got around to watching Wes Anderson’s latest, The Darjeeling Limited. I’m a big fan of all of Anderson’s work - Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, and Bottle Rocket. One of my favorite films, The Royal Tenebaums, is also one of his films. So I was surprised when The Darjeeling Limited didn’t live up to my expectations.

Anderson’s films are filled with a dry humor and feature quirky characters. The premise of Darjeeling Limited is that three brothers (Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody, and Jason Schwartzman) take a train trip in India to reconnect after their father dies. They don’t trust each other because of past experiences but they would like to - traditional Wes Anderson characters. But what makes it different from his other movies is that its just not interesting. I didn’t care about the characters at all. Parts of the movie didn’t mesh with the story and tone and it really hurt the overall story. And, for the most part, I was bored during the film.

The parts that saved the movie were the great sets, cinematography and the details that are present on all of Anderson’s films. The ending was also a high point after much of the story was a disappointment. Not a bad movie overall, but it was definitely Anderson’s worst. Three out of five.
