Google Upgrades Gmail. Nobody Notices.

I’m a big believer in Gmail. Its easily the best web-based email application out there. So when I logged in a few days ago I noticed that Gmail had been upgraded. Now I don’t know exactly what they upgraded specifically, but I do know what they broke when these “upgrades” went live.
I was greeted, after I logged in, to a red banner across my screen. I guess Gmail and Firebug can’t play nice anymore. I followed the instructions, supplied by Gmail, to disable Firebug for Gmail. No big deal, but it was an inconvenience.
Composing an email led to another problem. Better Gmail doesn’t work anymore which is the only way to have HTML in a Gmail-composed email. This matters for my signature mostly, which is now just plain text. Bummer.
I’m glad Google did have the foresight to put in a link to the older version though. Maybe next time Google can do a couple UI fixes and add some features that people really would like to see. To find out what they did add, check out this article on Mashable.
